LIVING WITH STATUS

In 17th Century Japan, the design of a samurai’s home depended on his social standing. The higher his status, the grander his property. Higher ranks lived in mansions, lower ranks in more modestly sized homes. Everything from the number of rooms to the type of gate one could have were subject to strict regulation. Design is tied to many things: emotion, need, practicality – in some cases, status. And in Edo period Japan, status was everything.
